Oscars take the stage on Sunday with best picture up for grabs

The city of Los Angeles is buzzing with excitement as the highly anticipated Academy Awards take place this Sunday. The biggest night in the film industry will see some of the most talented actors, directors, and producers walk the red carpet, hoping to take home the coveted golden Oscar statuette.

With no clear frontrunner among the contenders for the prestigious Best Picture prize, including films like “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave,” the evening promises to be full of surprises and twists. The star-studded event, which will be broadcasted live on Walt Disney’s ABC network at 4 p.m. Pacific time (0000 GMT on Monday), will be hosted by comedian and talk show host, Conan O’Brien.

In a recent interview, O’Brien shared his excitement for his first Oscars hosting gig and promised to bring a mix of humor, celebration, and serious moments to the show. He also mentioned that while there will be some jokes about current events, the focus will be on celebrating the talented filmmakers and paying tribute to the city of Los Angeles as it recovers from the devastating wildfires in January.

This year’s Oscars race has been full of twists and turns, with no movie dominating the precursor film awards. This has kept the suspense alive and has made predicting the winner of the Best Picture category a difficult task. According to Oscars pundits, any of the three films could take home the top prize. “Anora” tells the story of a sex worker with a chance at a Cinderella story, while “The Brutalist” follows the journey of a Jewish immigrant and architect chasing the American dream. “Conclave” is a movie about the secret proceedings for choosing a Pope.

Other notable contenders for the Best Picture category include the blockbuster musical “Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” and “A Complete Unknown,” a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet. The Netflix musical “Emilia Perez” leads the nominations, but its chances of winning were affected by the controversy surrounding offensive social media posts from its star, Karla Sofia Gascon, who is the first openly transgender person nominated for an acting Oscar. However, Gascon is still expected to attend the ceremony.

One of the most highly anticipated categories of the night is the Best Supporting Actress, where Zoe Saldana is the favorite to win for her role in “Emilia Perez.” Saldana plays a fixer who helps a Mexican drug lord, played by Gascon, transition to a woman and start a new life. The winners of the Oscars are chosen by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which includes approximately 11,000 actors, producers, directors, and film craftspeople.

Beyond the glitz and glamour, Hollywood is also facing a battle to maintain its position as the center of the global film industry. Interestingly, none of the ten films nominated for Best Picture were filmed in Los Angeles, the home of most major film companies for over a century. However, this does not take away from the fact that the city continues to be the hub of creativity and innovation in the film business.

The Best Supporting Actor category is also highly competitive, with Kieran Culkin being the favorite for his role in “A Real Pain.” The film follows a man who travels to Poland with his cousin to study his family history. The Best Actor category could see a close race between Timothee Chalamet for his role in “A Complete Unknown” and Adrien Brody for his performance in “The Brutalist.” Interestingly, Brody became the youngest Best Actor winner at the age of 29 in 2002 for his role in “The Pianist,” and Chalamet is nine months younger than Brody was at the time.

In the Best Actress category, Demi Moore is widely expected to win for her role in “The Substance.” However, some pundits believe that Brazil’s Fernanda Torres, who stars in “I’m Still Here,” could pull off a surprise win. With the Academy’s increased international membership, Torres could have an advantage, according to Ian Sandwell, movies editor at Digital Spy. He said, “She could well be a surprise and the only one to take it away from Demi on the night.”

The producers of the show have decided to change things up this year by not having musicians perform each of the nominated original songs. Instead, they want to focus on the song
