As part of the Angola 2025 Plan, set forth by the Angolan government to boost electrification rates using environmentally sustainable energy sources, more than one million individuals across 60 communes in Angola will gain access to public grid electricity.

In continuation of Angola’s electrification efforts, a ceremony for the signing and laying of the foundation stone for the Moxico Province Rural Electrification Project was held on Thursday afternoon, November 16, in Luau Municipality. This event, presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, saw the attendance of provincial Governor Ernesto Muangala, as well as ambassadors from Portugal and Germany, Francisco Alegre and Stefan Traumann, respectively. Senior officials from the energy sector, including representatives from DNNER, PRODE, ENDE, and the project’s patron, musician Matias Damásio, were also present.

Following the ceremony, a contract was signed between the public company PRODEL, representing the Angolan state as the project owner, and the Portuguese Group MCA, acting as the primary contractor.

Minister João Baptista Borges emphasized that this project stands as one of President João Lourenço’s key priorities, aiming to provide electricity access to thousands of families in remote areas of the country, thereby stimulating economic and social development in these regions.

The project encompasses engineering design and development, the construction of hybrid photovoltaic systems with lithium-ion battery storage, and the expansion of the electrical grid with new distribution networks spanning 12 localities. This initiative will facilitate the adoption of cleaner and more cost-effective energy, with plans to connect approximately 59,000 households through prepaid systems, benefiting over 370,000 individuals.

In Luau, the project targets an outreach to about 59,370 people. A photovoltaic park, featuring 55,500 solar panels with a production capacity of 58 MWp, is set to be established.

With a budget exceeding €1,027,587,914.00, the Luau Rural Electrification Project is slated for completion within three years (36 months) from the contract signing date.

Concluding the event, the minister visited Luena municipality to assess progress on the implementation of the city’s photovoltaic park, which is 95% complete physically and is expected to have a capacity of 26.906 MWdc. João Baptista Borges João Baptista Borges
