Former Supreme Court Justice of California, Mariano-Florentino “Tino” Cuéllar, has recently been appointed as the new director of the prestigious Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS). This news has been met with much excitement and anticipation from the academic community, as Cuéllar’s vast experience and expertise in law and policy make him an excellent fit for this role.

Cuéllar is a highly accomplished individual, who has made significant contributions in the fields of law, public policy, and international relations. He holds degrees from some of the most prestigious universities in the world, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. His experience in academia, as well as his tenure as a Supreme Court Justice, make him a highly respected figure in both the legal and academic spheres.

During his time as a justice, Cuéllar was known for his sharp intellect, fair judgment, and commitment to social justice. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of California in 2015, becoming only the third Latino justice in the court’s history. His decisions reflected a deep understanding of the law, as well as a strong sense of empathy and compassion for the marginalized and disadvantaged.

After stepping down from his position as a justice in 2019, Cuéllar was appointed as the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a leading think tank dedicated to promoting international cooperation and peace. In this role, he has continued to demonstrate his commitment to public service and his passion for improving global governance and policies.

Now, as the new director of CASBS, Cuéllar is set to lead the center into a new era of academic excellence and innovation. Located at Stanford University, CASBS is a renowned interdisciplinary research center that brings together scholars from various disciplines to tackle complex societal issues. As the director, Cuéllar will be responsible for overseeing the center’s activities and promoting its mission to advance understanding of human behavior, social interactions, and global challenges.

In a statement, Cuéllar expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead CASBS. He described the center as a “vibrant and dynamic community of scholars” and expressed his eagerness to work with them to address some of the most pressing issues facing society today. His vision for the center includes fostering collaboration and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in research and scholarship.

Cuéllar’s appointment has been welcomed by his colleagues, who have praised his intellect, leadership skills, and commitment to social justice. According to Scott Sagan, a professor of political science at Stanford and a member of CASBS’s advisory council, Cuéllar’s appointment is a “brilliant choice” that will elevate the center to new heights.

As the world continues to grapple with complex challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, Cuéllar’s expertise and leadership will be invaluable in guiding CASBS’s research and promoting evidence-based policies. His experience in law, public policy, and international relations, combined with his passion for social justice, make him the ideal candidate to lead the center.

In conclusion, Cuéllar’s appointment as the director of CASBS is a testament to his remarkable achievements and his commitment to advancing knowledge and promoting positive change. The academic community is eagerly looking forward to the new direction that Cuéllar will bring to the center and the impact it will have on society. We congratulate him on this new role and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
