Could you give me an update on how things are going with Corcho Rodriguez’s new initiative in Yellow Rose?

In 1998, when Jorge ‘Corcho’ Rodríguez acquired Yellow Rose, an exquisite estate nestled in La Barra, Punta del Este, it became the talk of the town in various magazines. Not only due to its captivating surroundings but also because of the romantic tale intertwined with it: the yellow roses had stolen the heart of our television’s leading diva, Susana Giménez, with whom the businessman was romantically linked at the time.

After parting ways with Susana, Jorge ‘Corcho’ Rodríguezembarked on a mission to redefine both the place and its name: Yellow Rose is now openly visible to all passersby. Travellers along the Camino del Cerro Eguzquiza, the optimal route to San Carlos, can spot the prominent sign adorning the wooden gate. It no longer solely pays homage to Susana; rather, it stands as one of the region’s most stunning country estates. In recent years, it has embraced a new chapter, unveiling a polo club and a winery to the public.

To highlight his contributions to Uruguayan polo and mark his debut as a winemaker, Corcho hosted a grand barbecue at Yellow Rose over the weekend. However, he didn’t inform most of the guests about the house wine gracing the tables. As the wine flowed among the hundred guests without labels, it piqued curiosity, especially among seasoned connoisseurs who detected a novel flavor. “That’s how I received truly genuine feedback. Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini were enamored with it and are already inquiring about purchasing it,” shared Jorge ‘Corcho’ Rodríguez with LA NACION.

Accompanied by Verónica Lozano, they epitomized luxury hosts for an evening designed for sheer enjoyment: under the starry sky, with the barbecue sizzling just meters away, amidst a familial ambiance, with melodious tunes setting the tone for a genuine gathering of friends. Federico Alvarez Castillo, Lara Bernasconi, Luciana Salazar, Pampita Ardohain, Julieta Kemble, Vanesa Kreth, Teresa Calandra, and other close acquaintances of the couple graced the event with their presence.

For Corcho Rodríguez, having a vineyard at home is about more than just enjoying wine. He’s deeply invested in the production process and has been actively involved in creating a high-quality product for seven years now. Speaking with LA NACION, he explained how they conducted soil tests with winemaker Caterina Viña and identified three potential varieties: tannat, merlot, or pinot noir. He particularly favors pinot noir for its smooth, full-bodied qualities. Despite referencing Romanée Conti, one of the world’s most expensive wines, he remains undaunted. “Yes, we set the bar very high, but we’re committed to maintaining that standard,” he remarked. The initial production in 2011 yielded only a thousand bottles because they selectively harvested only the best grapes, discarding nearly 70% of the fruit. “While not initially commercial, we believe in the long-term gains in quality,” he noted. In 2012 and 2013, poor grape conditions resulted in no wine production. However, they now aim to produce 5000 bottles.

The plants, sourced from Burgundy, France, occupy four hectares of minimally intervened land. Corcho emphasizes a natural approach, with no irrigation or chemicals. While not organic, it’s as close to nature as possible. He considers himself an expert in production, having always been fascinated by the process and enjoying exploring the flavors of wine. While he lacks ambitious commercial goals currently and hasn’t sold any bottles yet, he plans to distribute this year’s production among family, friends, and select restaurants. The goal is exclusivity, with customers ordering through a website or finding it in specific locations, particularly favored restaurants like Hotel Bristol in Paris, Fasano in Brazil, and Cipriani.

Additionally, committed to his polo club, registered with the Polo Association of Uruguay, he plans to release a book about Yellow Rose, showcasing his horses, club achievements, and the country house lifestyle. The book will accompany the wine, which no longer specifies the varietal on its label. “It’s our house wine, Yellow Rose wine,” he concluded.
