Hundreds of scholars, students, and community members from all over the country gathered at New Mexico State University (NMSU) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Imagining America (IA) Gathering. This annual event, which took place from October 18th to October 20th, brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to engage in meaningful discussions and exchange ideas on how to use the arts, humanities, and design to create positive social change.
The IA Gathering, first launched in 1999, has grown into a highly anticipated event for those committed to fostering civic engagement and social justice through the power of imagination, creativity, and collaboration. This year’s conference was no exception, with a record-breaking attendance and an impressive lineup of speakers and panelists.
The opening ceremony kicked off with a warm welcome from NMSU’s president, Dr. John Floros, who expressed his excitement and gratitude for hosting such a prestigious event. He emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting the values of diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility, which perfectly align with IA’s mission.
The keynote speech was delivered by renowned author, activist, and educator, Dr. Angela Davis. Her powerful words resonated with the audience as she urged them to use their voices and talents to bring about positive change in their communities. She also highlighted the importance of using the arts and humanities as tools for activism and social justice.
Throughout the three-day event, attendees were treated to a wide range of thought-provoking panel discussions, interactive workshops, and inspiring performances. The topics covered included race, gender, immigration, displacement, and environmental justice, among others. These sessions provided a platform for open and honest conversations, encouraging participants to think critically and challenge traditional ways of thinking.
One of the highlights of the conference was the panel on “Building Coalitions for Social Change.” This session featured leaders from various community organizations who shared their experiences and successes in working together to create a more just and equitable society. They emphasized the importance of building partnerships based on trust, mutual understanding, and a shared vision.
Another notable session was the “Arts and Activism” workshop, which explored the role of the arts in social and political movements. Attendees were given the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and discussions on how to use different forms of art, such as music, poetry, and visual arts, to raise awareness and bring about social change.
In addition to the stimulating sessions, the IA Gathering also provided a platform for networking and building connections. Participants had the chance to interact with like-minded individuals, share their work, and learn about other initiatives and projects around the country. This led to many fruitful collaborations and partnerships that will undoubtedly continue to impact communities long after the conference.
The IA Gathering also highlighted the work of NMSU’s students and faculty through various exhibitions, performances, and presentations. This allowed attendees to see first-hand the incredible impact that the university is making through its commitment to community engagement and social justice.
As the conference came to an end, the overall sentiment among participants was one of inspiration and motivation. The IA Gathering had provided a space for critical thinking, creative expression, and meaningful connections, leaving everyone feeling energized and ready to continue their work towards a more just and equitable society.
Overall, the 25th anniversary of the Imagining America Gathering was a resounding success. It showcased the power of imagination, creativity, and collaboration in addressing social issues and promoting positive change. The event also served as a reminder of the crucial role that universities and their communities play in shaping a better future for all. We look forward to the next IA Gathering, where we can continue to imagine and create a more just and equitable world together.
