My AP preseason Top 25 ballot: Clemson and Penn State on top as recent champs deal with quarterback changes

Over the past few years, college football fans have witnessed some incredible teams claim the title of national champions. The likes of Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, and Michigan have all dominated the sport and proved themselves as worthy champions. However, as we gear up for another exciting season of college football, one thing remains uncertain for these top contenders – their quarterback situation.

The quarterback is arguably the most important position in football and can make or break a team’s chances of winning. In the case of these four champions, they have all been blessed with talented and skilled quarterbacks in the past. However, with the start of a new season, the question arises – who will lead these teams to glory?

Starting with Georgia, the Bulldogs have been a dominant force in recent years, but their quarterback position is up in the air. After the departure of Jake Fromm, who led them to the SEC Championship and a spot in the national championship game in 2017, it’s unclear who will take the reins. Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis and highly-touted USC transfer JT Daniels are both vying for the starting spot, but it remains to be seen who will emerge as the leader of this talented Georgia team.

Next up is Alabama, who are no strangers to success, having won five national championships since 2009. But even this powerhouse team is not immune to quarterback uncertainty. After losing Tua Tagovailoa to the NFL, the Crimson Tide are left with junior Mac Jones and highly-touted freshman Bryce Young as their top options. Both have shown promise, but it’s unclear who will ultimately take the starting spot. One thing is for sure, though – whoever leads the Crimson Tide offense will have big shoes to fill.

Moving on to Ohio State, who won the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014, have a similar situation at quarterback. After the departure of record-breaking quarterback Justin Fields, the Buckeyes have a talented but inexperienced group of quarterbacks to choose from. Redshirt freshman C.J Stroud, highly-touted transfer Gunnar Hoak, and true freshman Kyle McCord are all in contention for the starting spot. But it’s anyone’s guess who will emerge as the leader of this high-powered Ohio State offense.

Lastly, we have Michigan, who have not won a national championship since 1997 but remain a top contender every year. After a disappointing season in 2020, the Wolverines are looking to bounce back, but their quarterback situation is a major question mark. With the departure of Joe Milton, it’s unclear who will take over the reins. Redshirt sophomore Cade McNamara and highly-touted freshman J.J McCarthy are the top contenders, but head coach Jim Harbaugh has yet to make a decision. Whoever is chosen will have to live up to the high expectations set by past Michigan quarterbacks such as Tom Brady and Denard Robinson.

Despite the uncertainty at quarterback, there is no doubt that these four teams will once again be top contenders for the national championship. They all have talented rosters, experienced coaches, and a winning mindset that has propelled them to success in the past. But the question remains – who will be the one to lead them to the top?

As fans, we can only wait and watch as the season unfolds and see who emerges as the starting quarterback for these top teams. But one thing is for sure – no matter who takes the field, they will have the support of their loyal fans and the determination to bring another national championship trophy home.

In the end, the uncertainty at quarterback only adds to the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming college football season. It’s a reminder that anything can happen in this sport, and every team has a chance to come out on top. So let’s get ready to cheer on our teams and witness some incredible football as these four top contenders battle it out for the ultimate prize – the national championship.
