Academic Freedom and Censorship: Why Librarians are Better Together

In 2023, the American Library Association (ALA) documented 1,247 cases of censorship in libraries across the United States. This number may seem alarming, but it is just a fraction of the total number of cases that occur every year. And while censorship can happen in any type of library, academic libraries have seen a particularly low percentage of these cases, with only 2 percent occurring in these institutions. This is a testament to the importance of academic freedom and the role that librarians play in protecting it.

Academic freedom is the principle that allows for the free exchange of ideas and information in an academic setting. It is the foundation of higher education and is essential for the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of society. However, this freedom is not always guaranteed. In fact, it is constantly under threat from those who seek to censor certain ideas or information.

Librarians, as guardians of knowledge, play a crucial role in upholding academic freedom. They are the gatekeepers of information, ensuring that all ideas and perspectives are available to their patrons. They are also advocates for intellectual freedom, which is the right of individuals to access information without restriction. This is why librarians are often at the forefront of fighting against censorship.

One of the main reasons why academic libraries have a lower percentage of censorship cases is because of the strong support system within the academic community. Unlike public libraries, which may face pressure from external sources such as government officials or community groups, academic libraries are part of an institution that values academic freedom and encourages open and diverse discourse. This creates a culture that is more resistant to censorship and allows librarians to do their job without fear of repercussions.

However, this does not mean that academic libraries are immune to censorship. In fact, they face their own unique challenges. One of the most common forms of censorship in academic libraries is self-censorship, where librarians may choose not to acquire certain materials or display certain exhibits for fear of controversy or backlash. This can be a result of pressure from within the institution or from external sources. In these cases, librarians must strike a balance between protecting academic freedom and respecting the values of their institution.

Another challenge for academic libraries is the rise of digital censorship. With the increasing reliance on electronic resources, there is a growing concern about the control and restriction of online information. This can come in the form of government censorship or the use of filtering software by libraries to limit access to certain websites. Librarians must navigate these challenges while still upholding the principles of academic freedom.

So, what can librarians do to combat censorship and protect academic freedom? The answer lies in collaboration and solidarity. Librarians must work together to advocate for intellectual freedom and speak out against censorship. This can be done through professional organizations like the ALA, which provides resources and support for librarians facing censorship challenges. It is also important for librarians to build strong relationships with their academic communities and educate them about the importance of academic freedom.

Librarians can also take proactive measures to prevent censorship. This can include creating policies and procedures for handling challenges to materials, providing access to a wide range of viewpoints and perspectives, and promoting critical thinking skills among patrons. By being proactive, librarians can create a culture of intellectual freedom within their institutions.

In conclusion, academic freedom is a fundamental principle that must be protected in order for higher education to thrive. Librarians, as defenders of knowledge, play a crucial role in safeguarding this freedom. By working together and advocating for intellectual freedom, librarians can continue to uphold the values of academic freedom and ensure that all ideas and perspectives are available to their patrons. As the saying goes, “librarians are better together” when it comes to protecting academic freedom and fighting against censorship.
