According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the airport is on its way to achieving passenger traffic and destination parameters meant for a hub airport. This statement comes as great news for the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi, which has been working tirelessly towards establishing itself as a world-class hub airport.

The IGIA has been on a remarkable journey since its inception in 1986. From a modest airport with limited connectivity, it has transformed into one of the busiest and most modern airports in the world. Today, it serves as the primary gateway to India, connecting passengers to over 200 destinations across the globe.

In recent years, the airport has witnessed a significant increase in passenger traffic, with over 70 million passengers passing through its gates in the last fiscal year. This is a testament to the airport’s growing popularity and its ability to handle large volumes of passengers without compromising on efficiency and comfort.

One of the key factors contributing to the airport’s success is its state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. The IGIA boasts of three runways, two of which are CAT III-B capable, making it one of the few airports in the world to have this capability. This allows the airport to operate smoothly even during adverse weather conditions, ensuring minimal flight disruptions.

Moreover, the airport’s terminal buildings have been designed to cater to the needs of modern-day travelers. With world-class amenities such as duty-free shopping, lounges, and food and beverage outlets, the airport provides a seamless and comfortable experience for passengers. The recently inaugurated Terminal 3 is a shining example of the airport’s commitment to providing the best facilities to its passengers. Spread over an area of 5.4 million square feet, it is the eighth-largest terminal in the world and can handle up to 40 million passengers annually.

The airport’s focus on enhancing connectivity has also played a crucial role in its growth. It has established itself as a major hub for both domestic and international airlines, with over 80 airlines operating from its premises. This has not only increased the airport’s reach but has also made it a preferred choice for connecting flights. With the introduction of new routes and airlines, the airport has further expanded its network, making it easier for passengers to travel to and from Delhi.

Another significant achievement for the airport has been its efforts towards sustainability. The IGIA is the first airport in India to be awarded the Platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Council for its eco-friendly initiatives. From using solar power to implementing rainwater harvesting, the airport has taken several measures to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices.

In addition to its remarkable growth in passenger traffic, the IGIA has also been successful in establishing itself as a hub for cargo operations. With a dedicated cargo terminal and world-class facilities, the airport has become a preferred choice for airlines to transport goods. In the last fiscal year, it handled over 1 million tonnes of cargo, making it one of the busiest cargo airports in the region.

The airport’s success in achieving passenger traffic and destination parameters meant for a hub airport can also be attributed to the efforts of its management and staff. The DIAL CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, has been at the helm of affairs since 2017 and has played a crucial role in the airport’s growth. Under his leadership, the airport has received several accolades and recognition, including the ‘Best Airport in India and Central Asia’ by Skytrax World Airport Awards.

In conclusion, the Indira Gandhi International Airport has come a long way in its journey towards becoming a world-class hub airport. With its modern infrastructure, focus on connectivity, sustainability, and dedicated management, it has set a benchmark for other airports in the country. As it continues to grow and expand, it is poised to become one of the leading airports in the world, providing a seamless and memorable experience for travelers from all over the globe.
