India in ‘no hurry’ to respond to Trump’s invitation to join Board of Peace: Sources
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

India has always been a key player in the global political arena, and its commitment to the UN-led world order is a testament to its role as a responsible and influential nation. However, in recent times, India has found itself in a difficult situation as it also values its partnership with the United States. This delicate balance between its international commitments and its strategic alliance with the US has posed significant challenges for India, but it also presents opportunities for the country to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the world.

India’s commitment to the UN-led world order can be traced back to its independence in 1947. As a newly independent nation, India firmly believed in the principles of peace, cooperation, and collective action, which are the pillars of the UN. Since then, India has been an active participant in various UN bodies, including the General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council. India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations is also commendable, with over 200,000 Indian troops serving in different missions, making it the third-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping forces.

India’s commitment to the UN-led world order also extends to its pursuit of a rules-based international system. As a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, India has always advocated for the rights of developing countries and has played a significant role in promoting South-South cooperation. Its voice on global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and disarmament has been crucial in shaping international policies. India’s respect for international law and its adherence to multilateral agreements have earned it the reputation of a responsible and reliable global actor.

However, in recent years, India’s partnership with the United States has become increasingly important. The two countries share a strategic and economic relationship that has deepened in the last two decades. This partnership has brought significant benefits to both countries, with trade and investment between the two reaching new heights. The US has also become India’s largest defense supplier, and the two countries have signed several agreements for military cooperation.

On the surface, it may seem that India’s commitment to the UN-led world order and its partnership with the US are at odds with each other. However, a closer look reveals that these two aspects of India’s foreign policy are not mutually exclusive, and in fact, they complement each other.

India’s partnership with the US has brought numerous advantages to the country. It has helped India in its economic growth and development, and also in strengthening its defense capabilities. The US has also supported India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council, which has been a long-standing demand of India. This partnership has also given India a greater voice and influence on global issues, as the US is one of the most influential countries in the world. Therefore, India’s partnership with the US has not only benefited the country but also helped in advancing its commitment to the UN-led world order.

Moreover, the US also recognizes the vital role that India plays in the global arena. The US has supported India’s membership in various multilateral groups, such as the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement, which has further strengthened India’s position in the international community. The US has also acknowledged India’s role as a key player in the Indo-Pacific region and has expressed its support for India’s vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

India’s commitment to the UN-led world order and its partnership with the US can also be seen as a balancing act. In today’s world, where power dynamics are constantly shifting, it is essential for India to maintain good relations with both the US and other key players in the international arena. This allows India to have a voice in global decision-making and also ensures that its interests are protected.

Furthermore, India’s partnership with the US also provides an opportunity for the country to bridge the gap between developed and developing nations. As a country that has experienced significant economic growth and development in recent years, India can play a crucial role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development in the developing world. By working closely with the US, India can leverage its resources and expertise to bring about positive changes in the world and fulfill its commitment to the UN-led world order.

In conclusion, it is indeed a challenging situation for India to balance its commitment to the UN-led world order and its partnership with the US. However, it is also an opportunity for India to demonstrate its leadership and contribute to shaping a better future for the world. With its strong commitment to multilateralism
