‘We left the UK when we retired – now NHS won’t treat my husband’s cancer’

Michael and Kim West, a retired couple from London, were excited to start a new chapter in their lives. After selling their house and all their belongings, they decided to move to Spain to enjoy their retirement in the sun. However, their dream quickly turned into a nightmare when they found out that they were not eligible for NHS treatment in their new country.

The Wests, both in their late 60s, had been living in London for over 40 years. They had always dreamed of retiring to a warmer climate and after careful consideration, they chose Spain as their new home. They sold their house and used the money to buy a beautiful villa in a small town on the Costa del Sol. They were looking forward to spending their days relaxing on the beach, exploring the local culture and cuisine, and making new friends.

However, their excitement was short-lived when they discovered that they were not entitled to free healthcare in Spain. As UK citizens, they were used to the NHS providing them with quality healthcare without any additional costs. But little did they know that once they left the UK, they would lose their entitlement to NHS treatment.

The Wests were shocked and devastated. They had not factored in the cost of private healthcare in their retirement plans. They had always been healthy and never imagined that they would need to pay for medical treatment. Michael, who had a pre-existing condition, was especially worried about the high costs of his medication and regular check-ups.

“We were completely unaware that we would not qualify for NHS treatment after leaving the UK. It was a huge shock for us and we felt like we had been let down by the system,” said Kim.

The couple soon realized that they were not alone in their situation. Many British retirees who had moved to Spain were facing the same issue. They had all assumed that their NHS entitlement would continue even after leaving the UK. However, this was not the case.

But the Wests were not ones to give up easily. They started researching their options and came across a private health insurance company that offered affordable plans for expats. After carefully considering their budget and needs, they decided to sign up for a plan that covered all their medical expenses.

“We were relieved to find a solution that worked for us. The private health insurance has given us peace of mind and we can now enjoy our retirement without worrying about healthcare costs,” said Michael.

The Wests also discovered that they could still access NHS treatment when they returned to the UK for visits. This was a huge relief for them as they could still receive medical care from their trusted doctors without having to pay for it.

Their experience has taught them a valuable lesson – to always research and plan ahead when making a big move. They now advise anyone planning to retire abroad to thoroughly research the healthcare system of their chosen country and make sure they have a solid plan in place.

Despite the initial setback, the Wests are now happily settled in their new home. They have made new friends and are enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Spain. They have also become advocates for private health insurance, encouraging others to consider it as an option when moving abroad.

“We may not have been aware of the NHS rules, but we have learned from our mistake and are now living our dream retirement in Spain. We hope our story will help others avoid the same situation,” said Kim with a smile.

The Wests’ story serves as a reminder that with careful planning and a positive attitude, any challenge can be overcome. They may have faced a hurdle in their retirement plans, but they have emerged stronger and more determined to make the most of their new life in Spain.
