‘Snow White’ review: It’s live-action and insurrection time for the apple of Disney’s eye

Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of “Snow White” has been making waves with its stunning visuals and star-studded cast. However, one aspect of the film that has been receiving mixed reactions is the portrayal of the seven dwarfs. Many viewers have commented that the dwarfs look animatronic and lack the charm and personality of their animated counterparts. While this may be true, the film has its own unique charms, one of them being the talented newcomer, Rachel Zegler.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first – the dwarfs. It’s no secret that Disney has always been known for its attention to detail and creating lovable, relatable characters. However, in this adaptation, the dwarfs seem to have missed the mark. With their stiff movements and exaggerated features, they do come across as animatronic at times. But let’s not forget that this is a live-action film, and certain liberties have to be taken to make the characters come to life. And despite their appearance, the dwarfs still manage to bring a sense of humor and heart to the story.

But enough about the dwarfs, let’s talk about the real star of the film – Rachel Zegler. Making her feature film debut, Zegler shines as the titular character, Snow White. From the moment she appears on screen, she captivates the audience with her innocence, grace, and powerful vocals. Zegler’s performance is a breath of fresh air, and she effortlessly carries the weight of the film on her shoulders. Her chemistry with her co-star, Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, is electric and adds depth to their characters’ complex relationship.

Speaking of Gal Gadot, her portrayal of the Evil Queen is a refreshing take on the iconic villain. Instead of being a one-dimensional, power-hungry ruler, Gadot’s Evil Queen is a complex and conflicted character. She brings a certain vulnerability to the role, making the audience empathize with her struggles and motivations. Gadot’s performance is a testament to her versatility as an actress, and she proves once again why she is one of the most sought-after talents in Hollywood.

Apart from the stellar performances, the film also boasts breathtaking visuals and stunning set designs. The enchanted forest, where Snow White finds refuge, is a visual treat, and the attention to detail is commendable. The costumes, especially Snow White’s iconic blue and yellow dress, are a nod to the original animated film and add to the film’s overall charm. The special effects used to bring the magical elements of the story to life are seamless and add to the film’s fantastical atmosphere.

But what truly sets this adaptation apart is its modern take on the classic fairy tale. While staying true to the original story, the film also adds a contemporary twist, making it more relatable to today’s audience. Snow White is no longer a damsel in distress waiting for her prince to save her. Instead, she is a strong, independent woman who takes charge of her own destiny. This empowering message is a refreshing change and makes the film more relevant in today’s society.

In conclusion, while the dwarfs may not be everyone’s cup of tea, “Snow White” has its own unique charms that make it a must-watch. Rachel Zegler’s captivating performance, along with the stunning visuals and modern twist on the classic tale, make this adaptation a worthy addition to Disney’s live-action remakes. So, don’t let the animatronic dwarfs deter you from experiencing the magic of “Snow White” on the big screen. Trust me; it’s worth it.
