The University of Alberta is proud to present the Pushing the Boundaries series, a virtual speaker event dedicated to showcasing groundbreaking research and ideas. This series is a platform for innovative thinkers and scholars to share their work and inspire others to push the boundaries of knowledge and understanding. In this edition of the series, we are excited to feature Dr. Stephanie R. Toliver, an esteemed scholar and author whose work delves into the realms of endarkened storywork and histofuturism.

Dr. Toliver is a professor of African American Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research focuses on the intersections of race, gender, and technology, and how they shape our understanding of the past, present, and future. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed book, “Black Futurism: The Intersection of Race and Technology.”

In her talk, Dr. Toliver will explore the concept of endarkened storywork, a term she coined to describe the process of reclaiming and retelling marginalized histories and narratives. This approach challenges the dominant narratives that have been shaped by colonialism and white supremacy, and instead centers the voices and experiences of marginalized communities. Through endarkened storywork, Dr. Toliver aims to create a more inclusive and accurate understanding of history.

But her work doesn’t stop there. Dr. Toliver also delves into the realm of histofuturism, a term she uses to describe the intersection of history and technology. In her book, she examines how technology has been used as a tool of oppression and resistance throughout history, and how it continues to shape our present and future. By understanding the past, we can better navigate the complexities of our current technological landscape and create a more equitable future.

The Pushing the Boundaries series is honored to have Dr. Toliver as our featured speaker. Her work is not only groundbreaking, but also timely and relevant. In a world where technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial to critically examine its impact on society and to ensure that it is used for the betterment of all.

Dr. Toliver’s talk will not only inspire us to think outside the box, but also challenge us to question the dominant narratives and power structures that have shaped our understanding of the world. Her work serves as a reminder that there is always more to learn and discover, and that pushing the boundaries of knowledge is essential for progress and social change.

The University of Alberta is committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity, and the Pushing the Boundaries series is a testament to that. By featuring scholars like Dr. Toliver, we hope to create a space for diverse voices and perspectives to be heard and valued. We believe that by pushing the boundaries of traditional academia, we can create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all.

We invite you to join us for this thought-provoking and inspiring talk by Dr. Stephanie R. Toliver. Let us come together to push the boundaries of knowledge and understanding, and pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future. The event will be held virtually on [date and time]. We look forward to seeing you there!
