Miss Manners: The neighbor keeps complaining. What’s the proper response?

As the cost of living continues to rise, many of us are feeling the pinch in our wallets. We work hard to make ends meet, but it seems like every time we turn around, there’s another expense to add to our already stretched budgets. And now, on top of everything else, we have to tip the plumber and the cable guy? It’s enough to make anyone frustrated and wonder, “Why do they deserve a tip when I’m the one working hard to make a living?”

But before we jump to conclusions and start resenting these service professionals, let’s take a step back and consider the bigger picture. Yes, it may seem unfair that we have to tip these individuals who already make more money than us, but let’s not forget the valuable services they provide.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the plumber. We often take for granted the convenience of having running water and functioning toilets in our homes. But when something goes wrong, we quickly realize just how essential these services are. A plumber is not just someone who fixes a leaky faucet or unclogs a drain. They are highly skilled professionals who have undergone extensive training and education to be able to handle complex plumbing systems. They are responsible for ensuring that our homes have clean and safe water, and that our waste is properly disposed of. Can you imagine the chaos and inconvenience if we didn’t have plumbers to rely on? So, while it may seem like a small inconvenience to have to tip them, it’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind and convenience they provide.

Next, let’s consider the cable guy. In today’s world, having access to television and internet services is almost a necessity. We rely on these services for entertainment, communication, and even work. And who do we have to thank for making sure our cable and internet are up and running? That’s right, the cable guy. These technicians work tirelessly to install and maintain our cable and internet services, often in less than ideal conditions. They climb up poles, crawl under houses, and brave harsh weather conditions, all to ensure that we have access to the services we need. And let’s not forget that they are also responsible for troubleshooting any issues that may arise. So, while we may grumble about having to tip them, let’s remember that they are an integral part of our modern-day lives.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – the fact that these service professionals make more money than us. It’s easy to feel resentful and think that they don’t need the extra money from tips. But let’s not forget that their salaries are often reflective of their skills and the demand for their services. Plumbers and cable technicians have specialized skills that are in high demand, and they are compensated accordingly. It’s not fair to compare their salaries to ours, as we all have different jobs and skill sets. Instead of focusing on what they make, let’s appreciate the fact that we have access to these services and that we have professionals who are dedicated to providing them.

Moreover, tipping is not just about compensating someone for their services; it’s also a way to show appreciation and gratitude. These service professionals work hard to ensure that we have functioning homes and access to modern amenities. They often go above and beyond their job duties to make sure that we are satisfied with their services. By tipping them, we are acknowledging their hard work and showing them that we value their efforts. It’s a small gesture that can go a long way in building positive relationships and fostering a sense of community.

In addition, tipping can also have a positive impact on the economy. When we tip, we are injecting money back into the local economy and supporting small businesses. Many plumbers and cable technicians are self-employed or work for small companies, and our tips can make a significant difference in their livelihoods. By tipping, we are not only showing our appreciation for their services, but we are also contributing to the growth and sustainability of our communities.

In conclusion, while it may seem frustrating to have to tip the plumber and the cable guy, let’s not forget the valuable services they provide and the hard work they put in to ensure our comfort and convenience. Instead of resenting them, let’s appreciate their skills and dedication and show our gratitude through tipping. It’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind and convenience they provide, and it can have a positive impact on both the service professionals and our
