Miss Manners: When I intrude upon a stranger’s marriage proposal, should I keep walking?

This has happened to me twice, and I don’t know if I’m supposed to act oblivious. It’s a situation that many of us have found ourselves in at some point in our lives. You know the feeling – when someone says or does something that leaves you feeling confused and unsure of how to react. It’s a moment that can make us question our own instincts and leave us wondering if we should just act oblivious.

I remember the first time this happened to me. I was at a party and a friend made a snide comment about my outfit. I was taken aback and didn’t know how to respond. Should I have called them out on their rude behavior? Or should I have just brushed it off and pretended like it didn’t bother me? In the end, I chose to act oblivious. I didn’t want to make a scene or ruin the mood of the party. But deep down, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I should have stood up for myself.

The second time it happened, I was in a meeting at work. A colleague made a sexist remark and I was once again left feeling unsure of how to respond. Should I have called them out on their inappropriate behavior? Or should I have just let it slide and not make a big deal out of it? In the end, I chose to act oblivious once again. I didn’t want to cause tension in the workplace or be labeled as someone who can’t take a joke. But this time, I couldn’t help but feel like I had let myself down by not speaking up.

Reflecting on these experiences, I realized that acting oblivious is not the solution. In fact, it can do more harm than good. By pretending like we don’t notice or care about someone’s hurtful words or actions, we are essentially giving them permission to continue their behavior. We are also sending a message to ourselves that our feelings and opinions don’t matter.

It’s important to remember that we have a right to stand up for ourselves and speak our truth. We don’t have to tolerate disrespect or injustice. By acting oblivious, we are diminishing our own self-worth and allowing others to take advantage of us.

So what should we do instead? The answer is simple – we should speak up. It may be uncomfortable and scary, but it’s necessary for our own well-being. We should calmly and assertively address the situation and let the person know that their words or actions are not acceptable. This doesn’t mean we have to be confrontational or aggressive. We can express our feelings in a respectful manner and still make our point.

Speaking up also means setting boundaries. We should make it clear that we will not tolerate any form of disrespect or discrimination. This may mean having difficult conversations and standing up to people who may not like it. But in the end, we are standing up for ourselves and showing that we value our own self-respect.

It’s also important to remember that we are not responsible for other people’s reactions. If someone gets defensive or tries to turn the situation around on us, it’s not our fault. We are simply standing up for ourselves and that is something to be proud of.

In addition to speaking up, it’s also important to surround ourselves with people who respect and support us. If we find ourselves in situations where we constantly feel the need to act oblivious, it may be time to re-evaluate the relationships we have. True friends and colleagues will respect our boundaries and treat us with kindness and consideration.

In conclusion, we should never feel like we have to act oblivious in the face of disrespect or injustice. We have a right to stand up for ourselves and speak our truth. By doing so, we are not only standing up for ourselves, but also setting an example for others to do the same. Let’s break the cycle of pretending like everything is okay and start speaking up for ourselves. Our self-worth and well-being depend on it.
